Gettysburg Address 150th Anniversary Observance
Fans of history and Abraham Lincoln are invited to join the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War for a short observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. An information board and flag will be placed at the Abraham Lincoln statue in John C. Fremont Park (9th & Broad St) at noon on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. The Gettysburg Address will be read to those attending. The Gettysburg Address was given by President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 to dedicate a cemetery for the many Union soldiers who died in the three day battle there the July prior. This fraternal organization is dedicated to preserving the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and the sacrifices made by soldiers and sailors who served the Union in 1861-1865. Sons participate in Memorial Day ceremonies, help maintain records of grave sites of Civil War veterans, repair monuments, promote patriotism and educate the public about the veterans? role in protecting our freedoms.
