Journey Through the Universe is Coming To Fremont
What is Journey Through the Universe?
It’s a big, even intimidating universe out there. How do we even begin to understand objects and distances that dwarf anything we have ever experienced? You might memorize all the facts—our galaxy has 300 billion stars, our Sun is 93,000,000 miles away. But where’s the learning? The numbers are so big they are impossible to comprehend.
But Earth’s place in space IS knowable in a tangible way—even for elementary school students. The secret is relating the universe to what's familiar using, for example, the power of models. You’re not convinced? Students, teachers, and families across Fremont are invited to take a magical journey from spaceship Earth to points unknown. When we come back home you’ll feel the words of T.S. Eliot: “…and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
Journey is a truly exciting and awe-inspiring national science education initiative that uses the earth and space sciences, and aeronautics and astronautics, to captivate entire communities, taking students, families, educators, and the public to the frontiers of exploration. It embraces the belief that learning extends beyond the formal classroom and suggests that parents and the extended family play a critical role at home and in other learning venues. It is virtually a field trip for family learning and Fremont has been offered this opportunity through the generosity of Dr. Goldstein. The program brings the world of science, space and engineering to everyone in a very real, entertaining, and understandable way.
Dr. Jeff Goldstein is the Director for the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education and does presentations world-wide, thrilling audiences that number over 2,000. Because he is scheduled to be a key-note speaker for the Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science at the end of September, he has kindly volunteered to present a nationally captivating program to the community. The program is focused on our home and presence among the stars. The program is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at Fremont High School Al Bahe Gym, 1750 North Lincoln on Thursday evening, September 29. Please enter the northeast door by the tennis courts.
The presentation is open to all area teachers, students, parents, university students and faculty, and interested residents of the surrounding community. Please attend, learn, and be amazed at this rare opportunity.
