Pay Range: $26.28 - $36.98

 

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of light and heavy-duty automotive and related gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.

Work involves responsibility for the performance of a variety of skilled tasks in the repair and preventive maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, rollers, and other equipment.  Work requires the use of independent judgment in matters of diagnosis and repair and initiative in the development of preventive maintenance schedules. Works under the direction of the Automotive Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Maintains and repairs a variety of motorized equipment including automobiles, tractors, trucks, front end loaders, backhoes, street sweeper, rollers, and related equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces shock absorbers, brakes, and engines; adjusts clutches; checks and balances wheels for proper alignment; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; tunes engines.
  • Does electrical work on equipment, such as installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
  • Welds and modifies equipment; fabricates parts as necessary; installs lights, mirrors, and other accessories; operates standard testing equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance checks on equipment; changes oil; greases and lubricates equipment.
  • Repairs and overhauls portable pumps, chain saws, lawn mowers, and other specialized equipment.  Paints and does body repair work as necessary.
  • Maintains records on repairs to equipment.
  • Performs related work as required and other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position is primarily manual in nature, working a majority (up to 80%) of the time overseeing the operational maintenance for City vehicles and equipment. Work requires a degree of manual skill, the ability to hear, and the use of hands and fingers.  Outdoor work will be performed under varying weather conditions. Some occasional exposure to fumes, automotive chemicals, dust, and paint. Interaction with co-workers is an everyday occurrence and requires the ability to direct, negotiate, and mediate. May work varying hours involving late hours and weekends. Responds to various hours outside of normal scheduled hours as needed. Requires lifting 40-50 pounds regularly. The position also involves bending, standing, and walking.

EQUIPMENT USED:  The ability to properly operate or use the following equipment is necessary for this position. Operation of heavy equipment and City vehicles. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational training in automotive mechanics. experience as an automotive mechanic at the full skilled-crafts level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment. 
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, specifications, and diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain work records. 
  • Ability to operate automotive equipment. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Skill in the use of tools of the mechanic’s trade

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Possession of a current and valid Nebraska Driver’s License.  Must obtain and maintain CDL within 6 months of selection for this position.
