WasteWater Treatment Plant Mechanic I
Pay Range: $25.03 - $35.22
 
NATURE OF WORK 
This is semi-skilled work in the inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment plant facilities and equipment.
 
Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, overhaul, and operation of the wastewater treatment plant.  Established procedures control the inspection, test, operation, and preventive maintenance of equipment, once learned, procedures are expected to be performed without direct supervision.  More complex tasks are typically performed by a fully qualified mechanic or supervisor.  Supervision is received from an administrative superior with the work reviewed through inspections and conferences for compliance with operating routines.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive
  • Inspects equipment for operating conditions, performs preventive maintenance of plant equipment, packing pumps, and assisting in the overhaul of equipment; cleans tanks and digester.
  • Operates/Maintains truck, mowers, loaders, composting equipment and various grounds equipment;
  • Repaints equipment and interior and exterior surfaces; operates manual and power tools.
  • Serves as helper on complex electrical and mechanical repair and installation projects; assembles tools and equipment;
  • Performs general maintenance and repair on electrical components
  • Fabricates and makes repairs using welding and cutting on various metals;
  • Carries out assigned tasks and assists in the more complex ones.
  • Fills in as a plant operator when necessary.
  • Perform other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.
DESIREABLE KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Troubleshoot problems associated with equipment, electrical and mechanical
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of boilers, pumps and electrical controls involved in the operation of wastewater plants.
  • Knowledge of pipefitting, welding, and elementary mechanics.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to read, interprets, and works from blueprints, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and to make required repairs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment required by the work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or equivalent GED or related supplemented by vocational or community college level courses in the mechanical trades; some experience in wastewater treatment plant operation; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills 
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a Class I wastewater treatment facility operator’s certificate as issued by the NE Dept. of Environmental Control or ability to obtain within one (1) year after appointment.
  • Employee must possess and maintain a current and valid Nebraska Driver’s License.
  • When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment.
